Of 74,786 households in Fort Lauderdale, the Census Bureau reported 2,383 were headed by same-sex partners in 2010. That's about 32 of every 1,000 households.
In 2000, Fort Lauderdale had 68,468 households, with 1,418 headed by same-sex partners, 22,037 by married couples and 4,080 by unmarried, opposite-sex couples.
Throughout Florida, there were 65,601 same-sex partner households in 2010, a 60 percent increase over 2000.
When residents filled out the 2010 census form, they were asked about the relationships and genders of people in their homes. "Unmarried partner" was a separate choice from "housemate or roommate."
The Census Bureau noted that some same-sex partners classified themselves as married couples, but the agency changed their status to "ummarried partners," even in states where they were legally married.
About 27 percent of female same-sex partners and 14 percent of male same-sex partners in Florida have children under 18 in their homes, according to Census data.
