Porn | Olivia Wilde Likely Starring As Porn Actress In 'Lovelace'

Olivia Wilde is likely to star in the upcoming movie Lovelace about porn actress Linda Lovelace .

E! spoke to the actress , who revealed that she's thinking about taking the role, saying ""It would be a tremendous honor. It's such a cool role. She was a fascinating woman"with where she came from to Deep Throat to then working with Gloria Steinem and Nora Ephron. It's really fascinating." And, yes, it is a fascinating story as quite a few books and the movie Inside Deep Throat will also tell you.

This is certainly not a common role for Olivia Wilde. We've been seeing and hearing more and more about her lately, this seems like a pretty eye catching role that may propel her even more quickly to stardom.

Making Love | True Blood Watch: Season 4, Episode 6 - I Wish I Was The Moon

Complaints aside, tonight's episode was kind of a big tease, with the moon looming over Bon Temps and not much happening, despite all of the hype. With that said, it does feel like we're getting somewhere with all of these little developments and the episode left off with some very interesting cliffhangers.

"The vampire I used to be is a stranger to me. I have nothing to say in his defense."
Eric pulled a Godrick tonight by showing genuine remorse for his past, and threw himself at the mercy of Bill. This, after being fang-blocked by the local king just as he and Sookie were about to get it on. Pam attempted to appeal to Eric's crueler nature, but reminding him of how excellently evil he once was only served to make him march even harder toward the true death. It was his last requests that seemed to win Bill over. As Bill was preparing to stab Eric with a fancy stake, having received the go-ahead from Nan on the matter, Eric requested that Pam be released, and to thank Sookie for showing him what it means to love. He went on to wish Bill and Sookie happiness together.

I'm grateful that Eric was given a pardon, not only because he's Eric, but also because I do hope that if ever he meets the true death on this show, he does so wearing anything other than that ratty sleeveless purple hoodie.

The episode ended with Eric and Sookie reuniting in the woods and making love on the ground. Aside from the fact that there was a chance Jason (or anyone/thing else lurking in the woods) might come across them, the whole thing was pretty romantic and surprisingly, no blood or vampy power-humping was involved. All things considered, this feels like the start of something real between these two and not charged solely by attraction.

On a random aside, it was as amusing to see Eric besting Bill in a fight at the start of the episode as it was to see Eric bow down to Bill the moment he learned he was the king. Eric is older and thus, stronger, but the old Eric probably wouldn't have knelt so easily.

Possession is Nine-Tenths of the Problem
Marnie's still in the custody of the vampires and while she lays around her cell, she's cutting herself in an effort to shed some blood and channel Antonia again. She succeeded in revisiting the witch's memories and learning that she was raped by a vampire that may have also been a priest, while being held in custody. Antonia got back at some of the vampires during her own execution by charming them out of their coffins in the middle of the day and watching as they burned along with her.

The vampire who raped her happened to be one of the vampires on duty to watch her at Bill's. After Antonia possessed Marnie, she summoned him down to her cell and then took control of him.

Also possessed tonight was Lafayette. He and Jesus went to visit Jesus' grandfather, who encouraged them to get a sacrifice, which he later used to nearly kill Jesus. After the rattle-snake bit Jesus, his grandfather and his pregnant whoever (girlfriend? Daughter? Wife? Witch-partner?) left Lafayette to "protect" Jesus. A man named Tio Luca appeared and possessed Lafayette, then somehow magically saved Jesus. Lafayette had no idea what happened, but he seemed normal but shaken after the incident. How this ends up helping them against the vampires, the witches or anyone else that might pose a threat to them, we don't know. Right now it just feels like a tangent, but I'm sure it'll be relevant at some point.

Not Sam
After a fire that may or may not have been set by Arlene's baby burned down some of Sam's bungalows, he was tied up dealing with the situation and somehow thought it would be a good idea to leave Tommy in charge of Merlottes. Tommy, having killed his parents, now has the ability to shift into other people. He learned of this new trait tonight when he shifted into Sam and made a mess of the man's life.

Not only did Tommy fire Sookie when she came to him (believing he was Sam) and asked for some time off to help Jason, but he also had sex with Luna, then threw her out. In all fairness, he was in the process of shifting back into himself and didn't want her to witness it, but still, not cool Tommy. He ended up passed out (assuming he's still alive) in a puddle of his own vomit. Sam has yet to realize that his brother was posing as him all night, and something tells me Tommy will regret the experience, especially considering it involved learning that Hoyt's mother hates him now.

Were-problems
Jason thought he was going to shift into a werepanther at the full moon. As it turns out, not so much. It took most of the episode for him to figure that out. At first, he sat with Sookie encouraging her to shoot him in the head when he changed. She refused to do that, but she did keep him company, until he ran off into the woods.

Jessica's now tuned in to Jason, because he drank her blood. Sensing his fear, she rushed off to meet him and she ended up being the one to keep him company and calm him down when he was on the verge of a panic attack. Their closeness makes me a bit uncomfortable, considering Hoyt is Jason's best friend. Jessica's already so impulsive and as much as I can see her and Jason together, I hate the idea of Jessica cheating on Hoyt with his best friend. I did think it was adorable that Jessica was so eager to rescue Jason. It was equally amusing to see Jason find his "happy and safe" place by staring at Jessica's chest.

Back to the were-thing, Alcide and Debbie informed Sookie that weres don't create other weres by biting them. It's strictly a hereditary thing, so Jason won't be shifting any time soon. Speaking of not-shifting, with the exception of Tommy, no one was shown shifting tonight. Debbie and Alcide were around for the full moon, but when they appeared in the woods, they were both in human form and fully dressed.

As for the werewolf couple, things seem to be slipping for them and their plans for "rigorous honesty." Debbie joined up with a new pack behind Alcide's back. She begged him to join with her. Whether he did or not, we don't know, but he was out with her maybe-shifting with the new pack tonight.

Tara Drama
Tara's girlfriend arrived in Bon Temps to get the truth from Tara. After Tara confessed everything, the two got rough and then got it on with each other. Tara's girlfriend doesn't yet realize the full extent of the kind of drama Tara has following her, but she may have gotten a taste of it tonight. At the end of the episode, a newly released and hideously decaying Pam came upon them and sprang to attack the women. We'll have to wait until next week to see what happens next.

Random questions of the night
What was going on off-camera in Nan's office?
Who was the lady baby Michael saw during the fire? Is she bad or did she help him by getting him out of the house?
Can anyone picture Andy and Holly as a couple?

Sex | Hugh Hefner Talks Sex

Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner has opened up about his sex life after his ex-fiance, Crystal Harris, commented on his performance in the bedroom to Howard Stern.

In response to Harris's claim that Hefner lasted "two seconds," Hefner announced, "For the record, I have sex on a weekly basis. And I did throughout my two-and-a-half years with Crystal."

Hefner also revealed, "My sex life involves more than one partner and has since the end of my marriage in 1998."

Harris has apologized for her remarks, however, and took to her Twitter to state, "The Stern interview scared me, he's harsh. I was unprepared and blurted out things I shouldn't have said, I'm sorry."

Responding to the tweet, Hefner remarked , "Crystal apologized for her Howard Stern interview, which I appreciated. It didn't have much to do with reality."

He later added , "I don't blame Howard. Crystal shouldn't have been booked on the show at this sensitive time."

Sex | Buyer's Remorse Needed In Sex Trade

Our research team had to listen to comments like that one in a Boston train station, where we traveled not to another city but into the minds of more than 200 men of all ages, ethnicities and income levels to learn about their attitudes and behaviors toward prostitution. The three hour-long interviews are part of an unprecedented study recently released by noted psychologist Dr. Melissa Farley, comparing men who purchase human beings for sex with men who do not.

Who buys sex? They sit in the office next to us, sing in the pew in front of us and break bread at dining room tables with us. And they’re the driving force behind the illegal sex trade, even right here in Boston. It’s simple supply-and-demand dynamics: Men demand prostitution, so pimps and traffickers supply bars, brothels and back alleys with victims.

The findings of the report, "Comparing Sex Buyers with Men Who Don’t Buy Sex," are disturbing. Despite research controls that matched education level, age and ethnicity, men who don’t and men who do purchase sex exhibit significant differences, especially in their propensity toward violence. By their own acknowledgment, sex buyers:

Commit significantly more sexually coercive acts against women in prostitution and against their nonprostituted partners;

Commit more felonies and misdemeanors;

Are almost eight times more likely than non-sex buyers to say they’d rape a woman if they thought they could get away with it.

Prostitution is not a victimless crime, and both groups of men know it. They’re aware of the psychological and physical harms of prostitution, with two-thirds of both groups believing the majority of prostituted women have been lured, tricked or trafficked into "the life."

Considering that the average age of entry into prostitution is 13, this insight is more shocking than it appears.

Some men even note factors such as childhood trauma or economic desperation as driving women into prostitution, with one man comparing "the choice" to sell one’s body to "the choice" of jumping out of a burning building.

While a third of sex buyers cite prostitution as "extremely negative" or "very negative" for prostituted women, they don’t find purchasing sex to be a positive experience for themselves either - 54 percent of the words they use to describe how they feel about the act are negative ("dirty," "depressing," "unfulfilling").

So while they feel bad, they rationalize buying women for sex by claiming that most men do it - an assumption non-buyers usually don’t make.

The good news? Men can be stopped from purchasing sex. And they told us how.

Increased consequences, such as more arrests of buyers (the latest Boston figures we’ve seen show that 11 women are arrested for selling while one man is arrested for buying), greater jail time and larger fines rate high as deterrents. So does being placed on a sex-offender registry. Having their names made public or a letter sent home to a family member would also make men think more than twice.

Greater criminal and social accountability is critical, but how do we prevent men from buying in the first place?

Education. Significantly more non-buyers (70 percent) than buyers (46 percent) say they learned about mutual respect for women in sexual relationships as part of sex education programs.

Anal | 'Explosion' Of Sex-Spread Hepatitis C In HIV-Positive Men

July 21, 2011 -- There is an ongoing "explosion" of deadly hepatitis C among men who have sex with men.

It's spread mainly by anal sex, often enhanced by methamphetamine , according to a report in the July 21 issue of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

"We are having an explosion of sexually transmitted hepatitis C," study researcher Daniel S. Fierer, MD, of New York's Mount Sinai School of Medicine, tells WebMD. "We have uncovered an emerging epidemic of sexual transmission of hepatitis C. And the main reason is men having anal sex without a condom."

It's no surprise to experts who treat hepatitis C. Liver cancer and cirrhosis caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV) already is the leading cause of death among people with HIV infection who have access to HIV drugs. Some 30% of Americans with HIV are co-infected with HCV.

Sexual transmission of HCV among people without HIV is rare, notes Eugene R. Schiff, MD, director of the Center for Liver Diseases at the University of Miami, who was not involved in the Fierer/CDC study. Among heterosexual couples, he says, only 2% of those with HCV infect their partners after 20 years of monogamous marriage.

The same may be true for men who have sex with men -- if they practice safe sex .

"Our data do not support sexual HCV transmission between HIV-negative men," Fierer says. "There is reasonable data that HIV-negative men are not part of this epidemic."

But that's not the case for HIV-positive men, notes Lynn E. Taylor, MD, of Brown University. Taylor was not involved in the Fierer study. In a study published last March, Taylor and her colleagues showed that new HCV infections are relatively common among HIV-positive men who do not use intravenous drugs -- a phenomenon previously reported in Europe and Australia.

"We have robust evidence of increasing HCV incidence among men who have sex with men who do not inject drugs but do engage in high-risk sexual behaviors," Taylor, who was not involved in the Fierer study, tells WebMD. "It is the new sexually transmitted infection in this population. I am very concerned."

Schiff notes that when HIV-positive men get HCV, they have much higher levels of the hepatitis C virus in their blood. Taylor and Schiff warn that hepatitis C infection progresses quickly in people with HIV infection.

"These men are sitting ducks for liver cancer," Taylor says. "If they don't get treated and get HCV eradication, they are at risk of cirrhosis or liver cancer. ... We are seeing tons of gay men newly diagnosed with HIV, and then with HCV. I could go to a funeral of an HCV patient every week."

HIV/AIDS Myths and Facts

Sex | Ricky Nixon Cleared Of Drugs, Sex Claims

Former AFL player manager Ricky Nixon will not be charged with sex or drugs offences, police say.

The claims against Nixon came after footage aired of him in his underwear in the hotel room of a 17-year-old girl.

The girl, Kim Duthie, had previously admitted making up claims she became pregnant to a St Kilda footballer, and to stealing nude photos of players she published on the internet.

Police launched an investigation into claims Nixon used drugs in Duthie's room, and breached laws relating to people having sex with those whom they are in a position of responsibility.

"Police have concluded the investigation and will not be laying charges in relation to the matter," a police spokeswoman said.

"As this is no longer a police investigation, no further comment will be provided."

Nixon has in the past admitted to "inappropriate dealings" with Duthie, after he was photographed coming out of her Melbourne hotel room but has denied having sex with her or doing drugs with her.

The AFL Players Association (AFLPA) launched its own investigations after the accusations about Nixon were made public, and its accreditation board suspended Nixon on March 24 for his "inappropriate personal relationship" with Duthie.

In the past Nixon has said he may have been photographed in Duthie's hotel room in his underwear because he had been slipped drugs.

After making sex and drugs allegations against Nixon, Duthie later made a public apology to Nixon saying, it would have been "absolute hell" and that she had lied about having sex with him.

Nixon has said the allegations against him destroyed his career, his family and his life.

Duthie later cast doubt on her apology, and was captured on film saying her change of heart was a lie.

She has also said she was drug-affected when she spoke to the AFLPA inquiry into the Ricky Nixon saga.

Nixon said previously he could seek damages in the millions and was also looking at suing two media outlets.

Lesbians | Our Time Just Keeps Coming

When gays and lesbians won civil rights in New York in 2002 with the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act (SONDA), that legislation ignored a two-year effort by trans activists and some State Senate Democrats to broaden its language to include protections based on gender identity and expression.

So, in December 2002, trans people and the leadership of the AIDS services group Housing Works created GENDA. No one knew how to pass gender identity-only legislation, but a small group of people were willing to try.

After five years of effort and an awkward reconciliation with the Empire State Pride Agenda, the gay and lesbian lobby group that steered SONDA to victory, the GENDA bill first passed the State Assembly in 2007, in a push led by Manhattan Democrats Dick Gottfried, Deborah Glick, and Daniel O’Donnell. The measure passed again two years later, in 2009, and once more this year.

With the election of a Democratic governor, Eliot Spitzer, in 2006, there was hope among trans people that their time had come. When the Democrats became the majority in the Senate in 2009, those hopes grew larger.

But the bill was badly handled last year by John Sampson, then the Senate majority leader, in his own Judiciary Committee and failed to move to the floor for a vote. Both he and Tom Duane, the out gay Chelsea Democrat who has spearheaded all the LGBT legislation in the Senate, said certain Republicans had promised to vote yes, but reneged under the glare of the media.

So, while there is a revolution for gays and lesbians in New York that reverberates across America and around the world, trans people in New York State, outside of New York City, Suffolk County, Ithaca, and few upstate counties can still be fired because of their gender identity or expression, can still be arrested if accused of using an incorrect bathroom or locker room, can be still be thrown out of their homes if a landlord is offended by witnessing a sometimes slow process of gender transition, and can still be forced to be mis-gendered by doctors and hospitals.

For transgender and transsexual people in New York, the expanding freedoms afforded gays and lesbians still feel far away.

In the early 2000s, gay lobby leaders told trans people to focus on city and county legislation, and then work up to the state level. Since none of us had any experience in lobbying for stand-alone transgender causes, that approach seemed to make sense. In fact, in New York City, Local Law 3, giving transgender people equal protection in our city, was signed into law by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in early 2003, after winning overwhelming support in the City Council. It was a wonderful moment.

Ironically, the legal protections we have in the city make us less effective as lobbyists for GENDA. Senators want to hear from their own constituents, not from activists who live in New York City.

In the State Senate, the only New York City members not in favor of GENDA are the same ones who voted no on marriage -- Democrat Reuben Diaz, Sr., of the Bronx, and Republicans Martin Golden of Brooklyn and Andrew Lanza of Staten Island. Carl Kruger, a Brooklyn Democrat, is an unknown. For the most part, though, city transgender people have done their job.

We need to hear voices from Long Island, the Hudson Valley, the state’s Southern Tier, the North Country, and Western New York, because the senators who represent those areas are currently the solid no votes on trans civil rights.

Still, the votes required for passage exist. As of the beginning of last month, there were 32 yes votes, counted informally, out of 62 Senators -- a majority, and more votes than marriage equality had when Governor Andrew Cuomo and advocates decided to press for a vote on that issue on June 13.

But the majority leader, Long Island Republican Dean Skelos, controls the agenda in the Senate, so GENDA was parked in the Rules Committee, which he controls, where it sat until time ran out on 2011’s regular session.

Opponents of this bill feel no particular pressure about GENDA, since they rarely see trans lobbyists and 2011 was, in an event, very focused on marriage. Some senators previously unattuned to LGBT rights are willing to take risks on gay and lesbian families in their districts and even gay and lesbian relatives in their families, but they find it more difficult to relate to transgender people. The willingness of gay and lesbian New Yorkers to come out and be visible has been a great strength for their community; the trans journey is much more difficult and fraught with obvious danger.

For transgender people, the GENDA campaign for 2012 starts right now. The same coalition that believes in the rights of gays and lesbians believes in the rights of transgender people to exist, to be educated, to work, and to have lives as happy New Yorkers. But we need more trans people out talking to legislators and educating them. We need to try to duplicate the effort for marriage, putting aside past differences and rivalries to come together with a singular voice.

But as trans activists mobilize, will the progressive and queer rights movements move on? Will focus shift instead to labor issues, or women’s rights, or housing -- questions that affect broad swaths of New York’s population?

We have repeatedly been told to elect more progressive state senators. We did that in 2006 and 2008, and yet we still failed. How many progressive senators are needed to pass trans rights in New York?

2012 will mark a decade in the struggle to enact transgender civil rights in New York State separate from the earlier push to include trans protections in gay rights legislation. Most of the people who started the effort have moved on with their lives. The younger activists are uncomfortable with the bill; they feel that it will not help everybody and, by incorporating the harsher penalties in the state’s hate crimes law, even hurt some. Many transsexuals live hidden, stealth lives, and are not willing to risk the safe, stable lives that they have created.

Next year also includes a presidential election, as well as races for all federal and state legislative seats. It will be a very busy political cycle.

And so we plan and meet and ponder and wonder, and look to our friends and colleagues and the new kids. We hope for the best. Soon, we still say, our time will come.

Melissa Sklarz is director of the New York Trans Rights Organization (NYTRO).

Andy Humm reports on t he failure of GENDAin the New York State Senate.

Hot Sex | Ask 411 Movies For 08.01.11: Mr. Popper's Penguin-Free Column!

When did Eddie Murphy stop doing stand-up? When did Jim Carrey lose his edge? Did Mark Wahlberg use a prosthetic in Boogie Nights ? Did Chloe Sevigny perform oral sex on Vincent Gallo on film? All this and more covered this week in Ask 411 Movies!

Aug. 16 marks the 34th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. Readers of the column know I'm a big fan. For August, our YouTube clip of the week will be Presley's best covers. First off, the Simon and Garfunkle signature tune Bridge over Troubled Water .

LEONARD'S FAVORITE EPISODE OF THE A-TEAM
Every week I highlight my favorite episode of a popular television series.

The A-Team was a great blend of action and absurdity that perfectly appealed to children of the eighties. One of the most absurd installments was when the gang joined forces with rock star Boy George and his band Culture Club. "Cowboy George" from season four sees Face thinking he made a windfall by booking country singer Cowboy George in a country and western saloon, but he actually gets Boy George and Culture Club. Hannibal impersonates Cowboy George and the show goes fine. However, the owner of the saloon is conspiring with bank robbers to nab the payroll of a nearby oil field.

Longest movie title I could come up with by combining titles off the top of my head: A Midsummer Night's Sex and the Single White Men Can't Hardly Working Girl Next Friday the 13th Part Three Kings of Comedy of Terrors
Broken up:
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy
Sex and the Single Girl
Single White Female
White Men Can't Jump
Can't Hardly Wait
Hardly Working
Working Girl
The Girl Next Door
Next Friday
Friday the 13th Part Three
Three Kings
Kings of Comedy
Comedy of Terrors

That's 13, try and do 14. No fair using imdb to cheat by looking up titles. Only feature films. Linking words have to be exact matches (like with Three Kings above, I couldn't use king or king's, it had to be kings)

It seems like I misunderstood a question about 'the end' last week. Barlow was asking about movies that end with 'the end?' if I understand it right now. I did some searching and couldn't find a list, so I turn to you the reader. If you know of a film that has 'the end?' at the end, please mention in the comments.

Q: You've answered questions regarding filmmakers losing their edge once they have children. But what about actors and actresses?

I can't help but of think of Eddie Murphy. He broke out big after SNL with 48 Hr's, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop. But for the most part his early movie work remains his best stuff. All he seems to do nowadays is safe and crappy family films. Sure, the remakes of Dr. Dolittle and The Nutty Professor were alright. But outside of his great work on Dreamgirls (For which I still think Norbit cost him an Oscar win)he hasn't been the cool and edgy Eddie Murphy since back in the mid 80's. Any thoughts? And any others that could be included in that same folder?
-Ben Piper

A: As Nick mentioned in the comments, Brendan Fraser said he wants to do movies his children can see. Since 2002 when his first kid was born, he's mostly done family oriented pictures. Since 2002 he has done The Air I Breathe, The Last Time, Journey to the End of Night and Crash all rated R. However, his most high profile films since then have been The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Inkheart and Furry Vengeance .

Jim Carrey has also become more family friendly over the years, but his only daughter was born in 1987. Oddly, he broke his engagement with actress Renee Zellweger in 2000 when his first real big family movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas was in theaters. They started dating while making Me, Myself Irene , released the same year, which might be Carrey's last real gross out, edgy type comedy.

Cuba Gooding Jr. has three children. Spencer born in 1994, Mason was born in 1996 and Piper was born in 2005. Gooding had a few decent performances after his Oscar win for Jerry Maguire in 1996. However, since 2000 he's mostly been in marginal films and his most publicized has been dopey comedies like Snow Dogs, Daddy Day Camp, Rat Race, Boat Trip and Norbit . He did have a small part in American Gangsta . Your mileage on Radio may vary.

Q: Did Mark Wahlberg use a prosthetic penis in the final scene of Boogie Nights?

Is there any mainstream popular non pornographic movie that contains real sex in the sex scene? There are movies that just look TOO convincing, like Monster's Ball, Never Die Alone, Desperado (and I think Eyes Wide Shut, not too sure)...I'm just wondering out of curiousity cause it's been bugging me for a long time

When did Eddie Murphy stop doing stand-up comedy? It seemed as if as soon as he REALLY hit it BIG in Hollywood he just stopped altogether while other comedians who hit it real big occasionally perform every now and then...
-Jackie Jay

A: neverAcquiesce in the comments last week said Sienna Miller and Hayden Chritiansen were rumored to have actually had sex in a scene from Factory Girl . An unnamed source told this to the New York Daily News in Jan. 2007. Miller's representative denied this in comments to TMZ.

Mario in the comments last week mentioned Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! from 1990. According to IMDB, the sex scene between Antonio Banderas and Victoria Abril was not real. Director Pedro Almodovar did nine takes in about nine hours. He used the last take because of the sweat and frenzy the actors had worked themselves into by that time. Director Elia Kazan said it was one of the best sex scenes he had ever seen. The movie had many graphic scenes, including women urinating on a toilet and Abril pleasuring herself in the bathtub with a motorized scuba diver toy. Protests from U.S. distributor Miramax helped lead to the NC-17 rating to differentiate between pornography and what can be considered legitimate cinema.

Lord Darias mentioned in the comments the notorious oral sex scene from 2003's The Brown Bunny between Vincent Gallo and Chloe Sevigny, which Guest 4786 disputed. Sevigny in several interviews has said the scene was real, including a Jan. 2011 interview in "Playboy Magazine." An excerpt from that interview on the Huffington Post reads:
"What's happened with that is all very complicated. There are a lot of emotions. I'll probably have to go to therapy at some point. But I love Vincent. The film is tragic and beautiful, and I'm proud of it and my performance. I'm sad that people think one way of the movie, but what can you do? I've done many explicit sex scenes, but I'm not that interested in doing any more. I'm more self-aware now and wouldn't be able to be as free, so why even do it?"

In the documentary Welcome To Cannes by Richard Schickel, filmmaker Claire Denis said Gallo used a prosthetic from her movie Trouble Every Day , that Gallo was in, and the scene was fake. So the legitimacy of the scene is certainly in question, but I don't see where Sevigny is served to claim it was real when it wasn't.

No trailer, it had a boob in it. We try to keep it somewhat clean around here. Just find it on YouTube, but you can find the scene in question on somewhat not clean sites.

Strummer mentioned in the comments Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger in The Getaway . The couple was married at the time of the remake. I found an interview by Bruno Lester with the two talking about the sex scene in the movie and it seems that it was simulated, if not very explicit and racy. From the interview:
"We did a lot of explicit stuff in the movie and some of the audience were very uncomfortable with the hot sex," laughs Baldwin. "They were squirming in their seats. We shot rolls and rolls of stuff and a lot of that had to be taken out of the film."

Basinger said: "Doing sex scenes are never comfortable. Even though I worked with Alec, it was still difficult. I mean, it's not Kim and Alec, it's our characters. I'm not going to share my bedroom habits, whether we swing from chandeliers or not, with anyone."

This link neverAcquiesce provided lists several movies with supposedly real sex scenes.

According to several sources, Mark Wahlberg used a rubber prosthetic penis for the last scene in Boogie Nights . Wahlberg said he was allowed to keep the prosthetic as a souvenir. Due to it being made of foam and biodegradable rubber it has eroded significantly since the movie was made in 1997, Wahlberg has said.

Perez Hilton quoted Eddie Murphy as saying the following about doing stand up comedy again in May, 2010:
"Within the last six months or so, I started getting an itch to do it again. I started writing stuff I was like, 'I could go and do 15, 20 minutes right now. Maybe in a couple of months I'll start working out again'. But it'll take a year before I'm ready to go on the road It's gonna take at least a year to get the rust off; 20 years of rust."

So by Murphy's count, he stopped doing stand up around 1990, which would seem right. Every few years Murphy has been quoted as saying he hasn't ruled stand up out and might do it again. I wouldn't believe it until you actually see him on stage.

Q: Just remember one FOX show that had a great premise but was cancelled: Brimstone.
-Guest 2349

A: Brimstone aired on Fox for 13 episodes between Oct. 1998 and Feb. 1999. In 1983, Zeke Stone (Peter Horton) arrested the man who raped his wife. He got off and Stone killed him in a rage. Stone was killed two months later. He went to hell and met the devil (John Glover). The devil said he was sent to hell because he killed the rapist and took pleasure in doing it, so it wasn't justice. Fifteen years later, 113 spirits escape from hell and the devil charges Stone with returning them to hell. If he can do it, before the spirits kill him, he will be returned to life and have a second chance at heaven. Episodes have aired on SyFy and Chiller, but not released on DVD officially.

Q: How does one go about protecting "ideas or concepts" as it relates to TV or movies.

Example: A while back it was reported that a network was thinking about creating a series based on the "Awkward Family Portraits" website. The writer of the column then asked how such a show would work. I then post a concept for the show - someone sees it, forwards it to their brother at ABC, yada yada yada, and it's a hit TV show.

There is no way for me to get "credit" for the concept because someone else can easily say they came up with the same idea, or that it was too generic a comment or it has been changed enough to be my concept exactly.
-Spanky Hamm

A: If you make a public comment in a public forum, whether that's an internet message board, a radio call in show or talking to a friend in a coffee shop, there's no way to

Lesbians | Obama, Pentagon Certify Repeal Of 'don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Washington (CNN) -- A 60-day countdown to the end of the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the U.S. military has begun, President Barack Obama announced Friday.

Obama, with his top men at the Pentagon, formally "certified" to Congress that the present "don't ask-don't tell" policy will end in mid-September without harming "military readiness, military effectiveness, unit cohesion and recruiting and retention of the Armed Forces."

Pentagon officials briefing reporters admitted there is still work to be done. Although more than 1.9 million military personnel, out of a total of 2.2 million, have been trained in the new policy, there is still more training to be done. In addition, there are open questions about benefits for same-sex partners, such as health coverage and housing allowances.

And the Pentagon admitted that although the policy is set to end September 20, the lawyers still have to figure out exactly when on that day the controversial rules will change.

This 60-day clock and the shared sign-off by Obama, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen were choreographed to allow the services to complete training and fine-tune rules over the next two months.

This comes as one of the first major actions by Panetta, who has been on the job for three weeks. He was ceremonially sworn in Friday morning by Vice President Joe Biden in the underground Pentagon Auditorium just hours before certifying that the repeal could go forward. He did not appear at the briefing.

"Today, as a result of strong leadership and proactive education throughout the force, we can take the next step in this process," Panetta said in a statement.

The 9th Circuit's Court of Appeals issued a ruling Friday extending its stay -- first issued in November 1, 2010 -- to keep the "don't ask, don't tell" policy in effect, even as it acknowledged "the government's likelihood of success on the merits."

More significantly, though, the court added it would prohibit "the government from investigating, penalizing or discharging anyone from the military pursuant to" the policy. That means the government cannot target gays and lesbians who are serving in the military, even over the next 60 days.

Pentagon officials at the Friday briefing said there would be no separate quarters or bathrooms based on sexual orientation under the new policy.

It has been a long and hotly disputed process since a lame-duck Congress passed legislation repealing "don't ask, don't tell" and Obama signed it into law just before Christmas. As the military spent seven months deliberately moving toward repeal, a parallel battle in the federal courts further muddied the issue with a series of whiplash rulings that ended and then reimposed the policy.

And while the military has saluted smartly and gone about changing the rules and telling the troops they better listen or else, the critics keep coming.

Pentagon officials said the service chiefs and the combatant commanders had unanimously agreed that their branches were ready for repeal. But some members of Congress want to know if the top military brass opposed the actual policy change and warned of adverse consequences.

"The president's certification culminates a flawed repeal assessment and adoption process and as such the House Armed Services Committee will continue to conduct vigorous oversight," the committee chairman, Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-California, said Friday.

"I am calling on the administration to immediately release to Congress each of the assessments performed by the services on the impact of repeal on their forces and all the regulations and policy documents that demonstrate the questions about implementation have been resolved," said in a statement e-mailed by his office.

Across the Capitol and across the aisle, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Michigan, applauded the action Friday as the end of a discriminatory policy.

"It is a fact that gay and lesbian service members have fought and died for our country and are serving in our military now," Levin said in a statement. "But the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy requires them to conceal their sexual orientation so that they can continue their service to our nation."

Department of Defense General Counsel Jeh Johnson said he is aware that some members of Congress want to know what the top brass thought of the repeal. "That request has been made. It has been made by people on the (Capitol) Hill as well and it is under consideration," Johnson said.

Mike Almy, who was kicked out of the Air Force five years ago under the "don't ask" policy, called it a historic day, a step toward equality for gay and lesbians Americans serving in their country's uniform. Almy told CNN he can't wait to reapply to the military.

"This is long overdue," he said. "This law has weakened national security and harmed our defense and thrown out 14,000 people."

But Elaine Donnelly, who heads a group called Center for Military Readiness, sharply criticized the administration for what she called a political payoff to left-wing activists in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

"On the day that President Obama signs a paper 'certifying' that no harm will come to the military when repeal is implemented, he will own the San Francisco military that he has created," Donnelly said in a release.

"Mr. Panetta is beginning his term as defense secretary by letting down military men, women, and families who were led to believe that their views would be heard and respected. Instead, trusting personnel who participated in the 2010 surveys and focus groups in good faith were misused as props to create the impression that military people 'don't care' about this issue," Donnelly said.

Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Steven Hummer said Friday that the Army, National Guard and Reserves will complete their training for the new policy by August 15. It has been widely understood that the Navy, Marines and Air Force -- all smaller than the Army -- completed their training as early as the end of June.

Over the next two months the Defense Department will continue to study and fine-tune preparations for the change, as well as review existing benefits and how they can be altered.

The military is toeing an optimistic line that changes can be accomplished without major disruption or embarrassing incidents.

"This undertaking is a fine example of how the services can come together to get a mission accomplished, deliberately, effectively and efficiently," Hummer said. "I know the good work will continue."

Sex | DSK's 'Physical' Sex Life

What makes Dominique Strauss-Kahn so sexy?

Many American women may think that question is oxymoronic . And some would take off the oxy. But the French politician known for weeks on the front pages of New York tabloids as "Le Perv," after a chambermaid in a Manhattan hotel accused him of trying to rape her and forcing her to perform oral sex, has a reputation in France as a "great seducer."

Now, for the first time, we have a woman on the record (or almost) testifying to his animal magnetism . That she also has a West African background, like alleged victim Nafissatou Diallo , only makes her testimony more piquant. Her account also offers some interesting insights into the political ambitions as well as the sexual predilections of this former director of the International Monetary Fund, who was touted as the leading contender to be the next president of France .

The woman extensively photographed but identified only as Marie-Victorine M. in the current issue of the Swiss magazine L'illustr, was a 23-year-old law student when she met the 47-year-old Strauss-Kahn in 1997. He was married then, and still is, to heiress and television interviewer Anne Sinclair . DSK, as he was called even then, was the Socialist mayor of Sarcelles , a town north of Paris with large immigrant communities, and M's Congolese-born father was active in the Socialist Party.

M told the Swiss magazine that such was the power of attraction she and Strauss-Kahn felt for each other that he stopped for a few moments in the middle of a speech he was giving when he first saw her. A few hours later, they were in bed together. The affair, says M, went on for several months, but grew more difficult when DSK became France's minister of finance . It ended in October 1997, "just after Yom Kippur," she said. Four months later, according to pages from a letter M wrote to her father, she was so distraught that she attempted suicide.

M said in the magazine that she has taken a phone call from Diallo's lawyer, Kenneth Thompson, who asked questions "that were really salacious, surgical." She told the magazine that she refused to answer the question of whether she'd had an abortion, much less whether DSK had forced her to do so. "He never forced me to do anything at all," she says she told Thompson. (Strauss-Kahn's American attorneys declined to comment on the story.)

As to the question of whether DSK could be violent, M was philosophical. "What's violence?" she asked rhetorically. "A man who pins you against the wall and kisses you, is that violent? There's violence and there's violence. To me, he wasn't violent." She said she couldn't tell how he would have reacted if she'd resisted, since she never did.

But when M first heard of DSK's arrest, some of the maid's account published in the press sounded familiar to her. "Yes, it's incredible," she says she told confidantes, "but at the same time he is who he is."

"When I read the first articles in the American press containing for example the detail that he was supposed to have taken his presumed victim from behind, that encouraged me to believe this woman," M said.

"I think he's a man who loves sex, who has a big sexual appetite, so, actually, maybe he went a little too far"a lot too far," M told the Swiss magazine. "And I am convinced that in his heart he's deeply persuaded that he's not guilty."

Asked to speculate about what happened to Diallo, on the basis of her own experience, M told the magazine, "Frankly, I think that there was a relation between the two, a forced relation. I don't know if it was about a rape. This is a man who is physical, so it's altogether possible that he grabbed this woman in a brusque or brutal manner."

M goes even a little further, raising a question that some of Strauss-Kahn's intimates raised in private conversations even before the scandal broke. "He was on the road to success and he sabotaged all his chances," she said. "But deep inside him, I am not certain that he really wanted to be president of the [French] Republic."

Uh-oh. Did Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony break up because Jen was getting on the floor with William Levy , the hired abs from her "I'm into You" video? Sex | Keeping Adultery Away From Your Marriage

Temptations if not taken care of in time will lead to adultery. It's as simple as that. You might say, there's nothing wrong with a little flirting, but sadly enough that's the same thought many people had before they had an affair.

When you get married, you must set boundaries for your relationship. Construct walls, create a fortress for your marriage, rules that pertain to your family. Inside that fortress the only ones allowed to enter should be God, you, your spouse and your children, that's it. This fortress will protect your marriage from outside forces that would want to destroy your marriage.

It is normal to feel attracted to other people outside of your marriage, even if you're happy, but the problem occurs when you act out on your feelings.

Adultery takes its process. It begins with attraction, then leads to opportunity and it finally occurs when you fail to take precautions.

Here are some rules you can create for your marriage. These rules are the walls that protect your relationship. Of course you have to set your own rules for your own family, in which both husband and wife must agree on.

Again, this rules don't mean anything if you don't follow them. What does it matter if a fortress has strong walls, if the door is wide open.

Some personal rules to protect yourself can be:

1) Don't allow yourself to think about being with another person, because thoughts lead to actions.

2) Don't flirt, because it tells others you are available.

3) Stay away from dangerous situations, because everyone is fallen and can be tempted.

Some suggestive rules and boundaries for your marriage can be:

(remember that you have to set your own rules and boundaries for your family )

1) Don't have lunch or dinner alone with a friend of the opposite sex. Don't find yourself alone with a friend of the opposite sex. For example, if you're alone at home and your spouse is at work, don't allow friends of the opposite sex to visit you.

2) Don't discuss intimate issues with friends of the opposite sex. For example, if you're having sex problems with your spouse, this is not something that you have to share with a friend of the opposite sex.

3) His friends are her friends, her friends are his friends. Have the same friends. Example, the wife doesn't like one of the husband's female friends, but he says, she is my friend. Here I would suggest that your relationship to your wife is more important than your friendship to that woman. This is what I meant by creating a fortress that only you and your spouse should be allowed to enter. If you allow this female friend to enter the fortress, problems in your marriage will begin.

4) Always be accountable to your spouse and be open about your friendships. By maintaining openness in your marriage and boundaries outside, you will keep your marriage happy and healthy.

Now these are suggestive rules which means that you have to create your own rules for your marriage according to rules that make both partners comfortable.

Now this is not to say that friends are bad, they're not, otherwise they wouldn't be friends. But friends should be there to help you strengthen your marriage. A spouse's friend should be a friend to the marriage. If you're relying on a friend, for advice and support, that is not a friend of the marriage then that's where temptations can arise. Seek advice and support from friends that will always encourage you and help you strengthen your marriage. A friendship should pose no danger to your marriage, but on the contrary should be a helping stone.

Seeing your marriage as a fortress and creating rules or walls to protect this fortress, is what will keep your marriage from adultery. Setting boundaries with people outside your marriage, is what will keep temptations to a minimum and in the end will only strengthen your marriage.

Wishing Your Marriage the Best.

Teen Sex | Generational Underwear Preferences

Where once there was little available in the way of choice, for males seeking to purchase underwear, males of all ages tended to wear the same styles in underwear. Today, as the underwear choices for men increase with new cuts, styles and designs, the preferences of different age groups now become apparent and play an important role in design, production and marketing of products. Targeting specific wearers is important because differences in age dictate differences in lifestyle and activities, which ultimately affect the choices and fashions for each generation.

Men`s underwear styles, as we know them today have had a progression through long underwear union suits, briefs, boxers, Y fronts and thongs. During the majority of the 20th Century, the "tighty whitey" brief reigned as the comfortable and supportive choice for males everywhere. Both men and boys wore this style with little regard for alternatives. Their use was perpetuated by arbitrary choices - boys wore into adulthood those briefs that their fathers had worn or their mothers had purchased for them throughout their childhood.

New designer underwear producers in the 1970`s and 80`s began a new era for underwear. Briefs became briefer and sported great varieties in colors, fabrics, combinations and designs. Calvin Klein, Sauvage, Ron Chereskin, Tommy Hilfiger, 2(x)ist and Jockey began to use "sex" as the main selling point for major advertising campaigns and customers began to seek out different styles of briefs.

Debate over labeling of fitted boxer briefs and trunks has caused confusion in some circles over the years. True, they are variations on a theme - yet have details particular to each type. Generally the commonalities are their fitted nature in a knit fabric. Differences occur with length of legs (mid-thigh or upper thigh/truncated), fly or no fly, and double vs. single back seams. Perhaps a simpler labeling system could include longer/shorter and fitted/looser wording. At least then buyers could visualize for themselves rather than trying to interpret vocabulary.

Simpler labeling would help to meet the needs of the differing generational choices of underwear styles. Teens in the skateboarding and roller blading crowd tend to favor longer and looser boxers. Whether this is a hold over from the Generation X preference for baggy boxer shorts openly displayed with jeans is unknown. Others believe the attractiveness of the looser boxers for the teen crowd comes with their identification with basketball styles. As the melding of innerwear and outwear design occurs, this trend is likely to continue for this demographic. However, there is a definite shift in preference for the 30`s and 40`s crowd of wearers. This demographic is physically fully developed, and socially, comfortable in their bodies. Shorter, fitted underwear that provides support and coverage, yet also sculpts the lower trunk, as well as defines and flatters the body meet the needs of this group. The appeal of the sleek cut of the fitted boxers is their body-defining look. Guys that have worked out to create impressive abdominals, gluts, quads and hamstrings will be happy to sport this line of underwear to flatter their bodies.

A new underwear competitor, Alenver Inc has identified this pattern in preferences and is adding a new cut to their collection. In February, 2009, Alenver will add a shorter, tighter line of boxer underwear to their longer looser cut already in the market. Being a relatively small entity, means their response time to the major changes and minor trends in preferences is reduced. This enables them to meet the needs of the targeted groups in a much faster time. Other underwear designers have also moved in a similar direction. According to FreshPair.com President Michael Kleinmann, low rise "gripper trunks and square cut briefs are doing well in terms of sales for Calvin Klein, 2(x)ist, C-IN2, Ginch Gonch and Andrew Christian."

Customer choice is a priority in any design category. New designs and additions to collections do not spell the end for previous designs, but rather provide the choice that customers deserve. In the male fashion arena, outerwear clothing choices and lifestyle activities lend themselves to certain underwear styles. For example, depending how tightly trousers are worn will impact the choice of underwear. Relatively loose fitting dress pants may be more compatible with boxers - but others may decide the feeling, support and fit of fitted boxers is preferable. Additionally, hip hugging low-rise pants may favor bikini briefs or boxers with decorative messaged waistbands such as in Alenver`s collection. Sporty active lifestyles may dictate shorter or longer legged boxers, which allow for easy movement for both everyday wear and active sports wear. Personal choice is key. Current and future underwear designers would be wise to consider the lifestyles of their various ages of customers and design for their needs accordingly.

Porn | Superior Man Faces Three Counts In Child Porn Case

A Superior man was charged Friday with three counts of felony possession of child pornography.

Timothy Daniel Urbanski was arrested early Wednesday morning after the Superior Police Department received information that a cell phone he'd given a 7-year-old girl contained what appeared to be child pornography.

According to the criminal complaint:

Police obtained a warrant Tuesday to examine the contents of the phone. Superior Police Sgt. Nick Alexander, commander of the Lake Superior Forensic Technology Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, located seven videos in the phone's internal memory that contained images of suspected child pornography. The images included children ranging in age from 5 to 14 in various state of undress and in sexually provocative positions.

Police subsequently executed a warrant at Urbanski's apartment in Bayview Courts and found printed images and photographs of young, pre-pubescent children similar those in the videos on the phone.

During questioning by Superior Police Investigator Thomas Champaign, Urbanski stated he was downloading child pornography, printing it, then shredding it in an attempt to rid the Internet of child pornography. He later admitted saving the child pornography to CDs and DVDs.

Urbanski faces a preliminary hearing on the charges Aug. 10. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and $100,000 fine on each count, and a court surcharge of $500 per image or copy of an image.

Sexy Chicks | "Zookeeper" Sucks, Fish Is Full Of Plastic, And S.F. Vegan Happy Hour!

Tonight is SF Vegan Happy Hour ! They're really fun potlucks with great food and drinking and drugs (WHAT NO THAT'S CRAZY AND ILLEGAL). Go meet cool vegans and eat until you explode! It's Friday, baby!

This is huge news: United Egg Producers has partnered with the Humane Society of the United States to commit to better conditions for chickens on factory farms . I mean, that's kinda crazy, because the UEP has been fighting legislation that allows for more room and better conditions since the beginning of time. The agreement is far from perfect -- it doesn't address debeaking and the fact that live male chicks are destroyed in woodchippers -- but the fact that UEP is committing to work with HSUS is huge. Hopefully this will lead to more reform for animals who are forced into these horrific conditions so you can enjoy your cholesterolettes. (See what I did there with cholesterol and omelettes? Clever? No? Well, I hope it at least angered you and pushed your cholesterolettes through the roof!)

Mark Bittman has got a good piece up about how Americans need to check their own food scene before bitching about how the Chinese are handing their food business . He talks about how there were lots of bizarre food safety and contaminated food incidents in China lately, and the government seems to be actively trying to cover it up by blacklisting journalists and so on. But the exact same thing is true here in the U.S., people! Glass houses, okay?

Your fish is full of plastics ! Yum! You'll have the orange roughy with a side of Gatorade bottle. No, but really: The dead fish you're eating is full of garbage. Fish are like, "Enjoy eating some of the garbage you poisoned us with before you captured and killed us, you homely motherfuckers! You can't even breathe underwater, you stupid!"

Salmonella in the States! Not only is that what I'm calling my first HBO special, it's also what's for-real happening. God, we live in a horror film. Actually, this time it's E. coli , and oodles of people in Tennessee and Virginia are getting sick -- really sick -- from scary shit that come from animal shit. This bit of coverage is really good , and includes a really sad tale about E. coli and small children. Now I'm just depressed BLERG.

If you're vegan and you're gonna get arrested, do it in San Francisco, where you can indulge in delicious (?) vegan food in jail ! Actually, even if you're not vegan, you should probably say you are, because the type of meat that's sold to prisons is SCARY. I mean, it's not as scary as what we sell to schools, but we've got our priorities!

Vegan Speed Dating is coming to San Francisco, and gentlemen, you can win a ticket ! SCARY LARRY/Fun! There is just too much to say about this topic and I feel like I'll break SF Weekly 's website if I start the jokes so we'll just leave it at that. But really, I'm a cynic, and if you believe in love, especially vegansexual love, go for it!

SF Weekly 's food critic/Resident Awesome Guy Mr. Jonathan Kauffman tried a King of Currywurst Chilean vegan hot dog and found it acceptable, if not amazing . Word to the wise: The bun has a little milk in it, but we're hopeful it'll have a vegan one soon. Until now, you can just hold the hot dog and eat it like a ... banana? Maybe I'll ask Kauffman nicely if he'll take me back and you can peep us eating hot dogs on a corner together! Celebrity sighting! I'm the fat redhead in the sexy floral muumuu and I CAN'T TELL YOU WHAT JONATHAN KAUFFMAN LOOKS LIKE ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?!?!

Sex | More Same-sex Couples In Ohio

Nearly 10,000 more couples living together in Ohio identified themselves as gay or lesbian in 2010 than in 2000, data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows.

Same-sex partner households grew at a 51 percent clip in Ohio, and now total 28,602, according to the detailed household 2010 Census figures released Thursday. The census bureau has so far released this information for 27 states, including Ohio, and Puerto Rico.

Growth was huge everywhere for this demographic. California, which has been historically gay-friendly, at 36 percent had the lowest growth in same-sex co-habiting, though Puerto Rico showed a decrease from 2000.

The increase signifies more than gay and lesbian couples living together and just being comfortable identifying themselves as such, said Ed Mullen, director of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights group Equality Ohio.

"When I was a kid and you were gay or lesbian or transgender, you moved to New York City or San Francisco," Mullen said. "People don't feel that pressure to move to the big cities in the same way."

Generally, Mullen said, people are going to feel more forthcoming with this information in cities where they are protected from discrimination. There are 28 cities in Ohio, mostly major metros or their suburbs, that have such a law, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio.

Phil Burress, president of the Citizens for Community Values, disputed the accuracy of the Census numbers. His group spearheaded the 2004 campaign that led to a constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriages and civil unions in Ohio.

Burress argues that college students and siblings could be counted unintentionally as same-sex couples, though the 2010 Census questionnaire asks for gender and relationship, including checkboxes for "brother or sister" or "unmarried partner" between household members.

Regardless, Burress said, the count is inflated. Until the Census asks if same-sex couples living together are having sex, he said in an email, "we can't assume they are homosexuals."

Columbus, with more than 4,000 same-sex couples, tops the list of Ohio cities.

"Columbus is one of the most LGBT-friendly cities in the Midwest, if not the country," Mullen said.

A lot has changed since 2004, including:

The end of the military policy known as "Don't Ask Don't Tell."

Legalization of gay marriage in New York, Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia.

Burress said he senses little momentum for the gay-rights movement in Ohio. He believes Ohioans are even more opposed to same-sex marriage now than they were in 2004, when the amendment was approved with 62 percent of the vote.

In June 2009, a Quinnipiac University poll found 60 percent of state residents opposed same-sex marriage, but were evenly divided on civil unions. The university has not asked the question since.

Statistics showing growth in same-sex couples isn't what's persuasive, Mullen said. Rather, it's the increasing interaction among LGBT people and their neighbors. This everyday exposure at school, church or the workplace is changing attitudes, he said.

First, he said, Ohio would be well-served to adopt statewide protections for discrimination against LGBT people. The next step would be erasing other barriers.

"If we have this conversation again in 2020, I will be surprised if we still have the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions in Ohio," Mullen said.

Sex | Safe Sex Better Than Abortion

Safe sex better than abortion

This is a response to the July 14 letter "Anti-abortionists punish women." No, abortion is not better than a child being born to unsuitable parents, even another Casey Anthony. Does the writer really value life so little?

Whether a child is killed by a negligent parent or in the womb, it is still killing a child. Neither is right. People seem to think if they kill another person things will get better. However, you just trade one set of problems for another set. Every action has consequences.

Women at whatever age need to think before they have sex. Sexual intercourse is what makes babies. Make a choice then not to have sex without taking precautions unless you want a baby and are ready for those consequences. Don't trust that your partner will protect you and provide safe sex. Be self-sufficient and protect yourself or don't have sex. If you become pregnant, then be an adult and deliver that baby. It's easier to live with being an adult than being a killer.

Anti-abortion is not to punish women. It's to have them think and not to kill. Why not be responsible adults? Rapes make up less than 5 percent of the abortions, or so I read. So abortions are just another form of birth control.

If women took more responsibility and had safe sex or were abstinent there would be no need for abortions or children to be given away.

The letter writer suggests that we could save the pain of the living for people in these circumstances. Then we should all die because we all live with suffering of one kind or another. Life is hard " the trick is to live it and be proud in the end that it wasn't at the expense of another.

Tax cuts didn't create jobs

Our Congress debates job creation endlessly. Some like to champion the myth that cutting corporate taxes will create jobs. While this seems to make sense to some, it is just not entirely correct. The consumer-demand side of economics is just as important and makes things work. If they don't have the money to purchase, no smart business will supply goods or services.

The tax cuts for the wealthiest among us and the job creators during the George W. Bush administration have been in force for 10 years now " and where are the jobs?

Supply-side (economics) first needs consumer demand, and that is why I believe not enough jobs were created in 10 years.

Furthermore, how many jobs have professional athletes and the idle rich created during this time? I would think not too many. The fact is that the vast majority of the American people want this tax segment repealed. This does not raise taxes on lower-income taxpayers.

Based on historical results of the past administration, members of Congress should not expect a different outcome on jobs. It would make sense not to pursue the failed policy of the past. More creative thinking is needed.

Like it or not, the stimulus that Bush started, $700 billion, and that Obama agreed to and continued along the same path really avoided financial disaster and started positive job growth.

Let us hope that all political parties will set aside their hard-line positions and work for the good of the American people.

Government can't run health care

With all of the turmoil in our nation's capital over the national debt and raising the "debt ceiling," the question that should be in the back of everyone's mind is, does the federal government have any right to believe it can run a national health care program when it cannot make a decision to raise the limit on our national credit card?

We obviously have a debt crisis. Even our treasury secretary and our president have all but said we are headed for financial Armageddon if a deal is not reached on the debt crisis and federal deficit spending is not reined in. With the new health care law, a 2,500-plus-page bill that, I am certain, nobody read before voting on it, we have added even more of a financial burden to the already overwhelmed and overspent federal government coffers.

Initially we were told the health care act was budget neutral and would even save money. After the health care act became law and we were able to see what was really in the bill, the Congressional Budget Office decided it was not as budget neutral as initially assessed. And if anyone believes the federal government can run any business profitably and spend our money wisely, just look at our struggling Post Office, Amtrak or the Social Security system's "strongbox" in which our retirement funds were to be kept separate from the other money in the U.S. Treasury.

Now our president has openly said that he may decide to use that money in a different way, such as paying our creditors, the Chinese, Japanese and Saudi governments.

So, as our confidence in the federal government continues to wane and we honestly look at the spending habits of our congressional leaders, can we realistically believe they can run our health care system?

Congress members playing stupid

I know our U.S. senators and representatives are brighter than they are letting on.

They have shown in the past that they understand how the debt ceiling vote works. What are they thinking? Are our Congress members so politically parochial that they have lost sight that they are public servants, not servants to their political party, big business and lobbyists?

The country (and the world) does not have the financial stability to be playing this game of chicken. It's high time we, the people that are soon to be affected, tell them to grow up and start serving our interests.

The first debt ceiling was set in 1917. Since 1962 the debt ceiling has been raised 74 times " 10 since 2001. I think our senators have been part of those last 10 raises " Sen. Lamar Alexander since 2003 and Sen. Bob Corker since 2007. The hate and contempt that is being shown for the president is something I never thought I would live to watch. To give just one example of the contempt, let's take a look at the voting record of GOP senators. From 2002 to 2010 Republicans voted "yea" to raise the debt ceiling.

If my Social Security check does not arrive on time, if my husband's pension from the military does not arrive on time, if the Veterans Affairs centers stop seeing my husband for his next appointment, if the much-needed highway work is stopped, if Medicare stops being accepted by my doctor, I am going to be one very angry constituent! I just cannot understand why there aren't more people who are angry and telling Washington to grow up and compromise and table their animosity to the first black president. Get over it and govern.

Book title's foulness devalues children

I am not sure that I can find the right words to express the shock, anger and disbelief I experienced while reading Ina Hughs' July 24 column.

I suppose I am one of the few people who had not heard about the book Hughs was endorsing. I am an avid reader, but this had not been on my radar at all.

I am the mother of two daughters, grandmother of two children, not a saint at all but proud to be a Christian. I am short-tempered but on the other side have a very good sense of humor. I have put my children to bed many nights when they were not ready to go to bed. But I have never had an experience that would make (the title of the book) even go through my mind. My children and grandchildren are so very precious to me and my husband. We are so thankful for them. I cannot imagine using such obscene language in reference to my children or their sleeping habits or anything else.

The devaluing of children is why we have mothers who fail to report their missing children or who drive them into a lake to drown them like a sackful of kittens. May God help us and continue to have mercy on us, for we do not deserve it.

Sex | Teaching Teenagers About The Joy Of Sex

In response to Tuesday's post about different levels of parental tolerance of teenage sex, Jennifer, from Norwood, N.J., wrote, "There's probably some middle ground between ‘not under my roof' and discussing your favorite positions over breakfast."

Jennifer, meet Kathleen Volk Miller, who teaches at Drexel University and edits the Painted Bride Quarterly there. She is also working on a collection of essays, titled "My Gratitude," about family, loss\ and the surprising bonds that tether us.

It wasn't over breakfast, but rather lunch, where the graphic and specific conversation with her teen took place. But - with apologies to those who might have been sitting within earshot in the local diner that afternoon - sex is part of life, Ms. Miller writes in a guest post today, and she was going to make darn sure her daughter was prepared and protected.

Later in the day, another reality of life came her daughter's way. You can't control what happens to your children, Ms. Miller learned, but you can make sure you keep talking to them.

SEX, DEATH AND BIRTH CONTROL
By Kathleen Volk Miller

Allison and I are at the Crystal Lake Diner, her favorite place for lunch with me alone since she was about 5 years old. She is now 17. And we have to order what we have always ordered: a cheeseburger with fries and a Greek salad.

I take turns, rotating through Saturdays, taking each of my three children to lunch. We started this practice after a short stint at family therapy to help 9-year-old Chris with sleeping issues. After a few sessions with the therapist, which always included lunch afterwards, I realized I was getting more "done" at the lunches. I learned more about them and they got to ask me questions, talk about things, that didn't have space to come up in our normal lives.

Allison had been dating Andy for about three months. She had started out lukewarm, didn't know how to respond to his "I miss you" text messages. But now, she saw him every day, and on the days she didn't, we all went through high drama, depths of despair.

I really don't know how the topic first came up, but we got on the issue of sex before our meal came. A few weeks prior, Allison's best friend had had a pregnancy scare. She had done the E.P.T. at our house. Allison had let me know, and had used that opportunity to ask me if I would take her to the gynecologist and get her on birth control when she was ready, so that she'd never have to go through the anxiety her friend was going through. I had told her I would.

And now she was asking me to make the appointment. I hadn't expected her to be ready so soon. She emphasized how good she felt about how she was handling things. She and Andy were each other's first everything: neither of them had even French-kissed until they were with each other.

She let me know that every step had been slow, at least a week advanced before they went a step further. She told me that even when he put his hand on her breast, on top of her shirt, he looked her in the eyes, and asked if it was O.K.

I told her that was sweet and respectful and hid how hard it had become for me to accept. She repeated again and again that she "was doing this the right way," that I had "no idea how many kids have sex first, then date," and that she and Andy both felt good about developing their relationship first.

We talked about another girl at school, rumored to have become drunk at a party, who had intercourse with one boy, oral sex with another. We laughed at how Hayley, my younger daughter, vowed she would never have oral sex, even when she was married, and her future husband would have to understand, "or too bad." Somehow, we stayed on the subject of oral sex, and there was just something about the way she wouldn't meet my eye that I found myself saying, "Alli, have you done that?" She kept her eyes on her cheeseburger but nodded, "Yes."

I was glad her eyes were on her plate, so that she couldn't see the look that crossed mine. I managed to say, "So, what do you think?"

She said: "It's O.K. It's not as gross as I thought it would be. I mean, I guess I'm not getting that much out of it, but I like making him happy that way."

I asked if he had ever reciprocated and she said: "No. It's just so much grosser."

I did my best to correct that thought, and wondered where I had failed her.

And she said: "Well, I don't even know what he's supposed to do. He doesn't even know what he's supposed to do."

And over a Greek salad and fries, I told her. I spared no detail. I was Dr. Ruth. I spoke in plain language and never flinched. I realized, as I spoke, how important this moment was. I realized that I was giving Allison the opportunity to talk about sex. Simply that, she was being trained that it was O.K. to talk about her clitoris in a diner. I want her to be a woman who can not only do this, but who can discuss it over lunch with her friends. She stayed as objective as I was, asking questions, listening hard to what I had to say.

She told me that she and Andy talked and talked about everything. That he was willing to wait as long as she needed to wait. That she had told him that not only would she be on the pill first, but that he would still wear a condom, how she saw his not using one as another step, something she wasn't ready for yet. She told me how one time, when they were making out, he stopped and said, "You know, I really like just holding you and talking, too."

She told me how happy she was that they were open about things. How comfortable she was with him. How she couldn't believe it herself. How she never thought she could feel this way.

I thought about what it would be like next time I saw him. He is a gorgeous boy, with full lips and blue eyes that can only be called beautiful. He's 6-foot-2 and she looks like a little princess with him, and you can see how much he adores her in his eyes, in the way he bends toward her when she talks. Now that I knew, could I carry on a conversation with him without punching him in the face?

I thought, "If this has to happen, she is doing this right, and this is the right boy." But does it have to happen so soon? Does it have to happen now?

Eventually we left, and I dropped Allison off for an afternoon at the mall with her friends. A few hours later she called me at home, and all she said was, "Mom?" and I could tell she was crying.

"Seth died," she said, meaning her good friend Sydney's half-brother, who had been in a severe car accident a few weeks earlier, but had been in stable condition for at least two weeks. Sydney was shopping right then with Allison, and had learned the news moments before. I could hear the other girls sobbing in the background and I could picture them in a tight circle at the mall, three hysterical teenagers in a huddle as people brushed past. Sydney's mother was already on her way to get them.

When Allison finally came home, we hugged and kissed and cried. "It's just so strange," I said. "After our conversation this afternoon that was so much about celebrating life."

"I know," she said. "I thought about that, too." We smiled at each other as we held hands and teared up again, and then she said, "I think maybe the lesson we are to learn here is that we should have as much sex as possible - and eat a lot."

A sound came out of my throat that was somewhere between a laugh and a sob. On Monday morning I made Allison's appointment at the gynecologist, and stopped myself from telling the receptionist everything.

Making Love | DOCTOR'S ADVICE - Will The Operation Spoil Her Sex Life?

Q. Doctor, my husband and I have always had a great sex life. We still make love around three times for the week. But now I have a problem. You see doc, I am facing a hysterectomy operation soon. And I greatly fear that this will be the end of our sex life. My mother has told me that no woman who has had a hysterectomy can have sex. Is this true? It would be a tragedy if our sex life together was over. Also, how do they do this operation? I do not understand.

A. Please don't fret. What your mother has told you is NOT correct, though I am sure that she believes it. Such ideas were common when she was younger.

Let me explain. Hysterectomy is simply removal of the womb. But the womb is not actually involved in sexual intercourse. So that means that it is perfectly possible for the woman to have intercourse after the operation, although she must first have time to recover while her tissues heal up.

Hysterectomy is a real common operation, and at one time around one in eight of all women ended up undergoing it. These days, it has become a little less frequent because of the arrival of new treatments which avoid the need for surgery. However, in your case it is clear that a gynaecologist has decided that you need to take this 'op'. There are three ways of doing it:

1. The first involves making a cut in the lower part of the belly, and taking the womb out that way;

2. The second is to operate through the vagina, so that there is no need for a cut in the skin;

3. The third is to use 'keyhole' or laparoscopic surgery, by putting telescope-like instruments through tiny holes in the belly.

Now, the parts of a woman that are mainly involved in sex are the vagina and the clitoris. They are NOT affected by a hysterectomy, except in rare circumstances.

However, I must explain that there are various types of hysterectomy: a) Total hysterectomy - removing the womb; b) Subtotal - removing the womb, but leaving the woman's cervix where it is; c) Radical hysterectomy - removing the womb and much of the surrounding tissues. This is done only in cases of cancer, and it is unusual. d) Hysterectomy with Oophorectomy - removing the womb and the ovaries.

I feel you should ask the gynaecologist to tell you precisely which type of hysterectomy will be done. But unless you have womb cancer and are going to take the radical hysterectomy, you should have no difficulty in returning to sex, probably around a couple of months after the surgery. I wish you well.

Q. Can you explain to me about rectal examinations? I am a man, and I have had some minor health problems recently. As a result, my doctor says that I must have a 'DRE'. When I asked him what this was, he replied that it meant 'digital rectal examination'. But I am not so sure about this! Why is he going to do it? Is it very painful? And is there any danger that I might actually like it?

A . There is no need to fret. Doctors do DREs every day, and they try to do them in such a way as to cause as little discomfort as possible for their patients.

What is the point of this examination? Well, it enables the doctor to feel if there is anything wrong in the lowest few inches of the rectum. Also, most importantly, the doctor can use this technique to feel the prostate gland, and so assess its shape, size and firmness. What the doctor will do is to get you to lie on your left side, and then draw your knees up as far as you can. He will then put on a rubber glove, and squeeze some lubricant onto his fingertip. Finally, he will insert his finger into your bottom, and spend a few seconds in feeling forwards, backwards and sideways.

You enquire about pain. In fact, this examination is NOT really painful, but it is generally uncomfortable. However, the discomfort is gone in a few seconds. Finally, you ask the common question: 'Is there any danger that you might like it?' Men pose this question when they are concerned about issues of possible homosexuality. But in practice, I do not think that I have ever seen a patient who derived any pleasure from undergoing a rectal examination. So you have no need to fret.

Q. I am a female Gleaner reader in the USA, and recently I have been under much stress and sexual tension. I have been advised that I should take some kind of therapy called 'CBT'. Do you know what that is doc? And would I have to take any pills?

A The letters CBT stand for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This is a type of treatment which is widely used for stress, anxiety and some sexual problems. Basically, it involves talking with a therapist for periods of around an hour, at least once a week for a couple of months or more. She encourages you to completely alter the way you think, so that eventually you take a much more positive attitude to life. CBT has helped many people and there are no pills involved.

Q. I am a man, aged 35. I am a little worried by the fact that when I was younger, I masturbated a lot. Now my girlfriend has told me that there is a link between cancer of the prostate and masturbation. So does this mean that I will get it, doc?

A. Your girlfriend is right in saying that scientists have shown a link between masturbation and prostate cancer. But it is not what you think! In fact, the researchers found the rather surprising fact that men who have masturbated are LESS likely to develop prostate cancer. So you can quit fretting.

Q. I am 28 and female. I have never had a vaginal examination before, but I am going to have to undergo one next week. My doctor's nurse told me that he will be putting a speculum inside me. What does this mean? Is it a really bad experience?

A. Well, a speculum is just a little device which enables the doctor to see inside the vagina, and get a good view of the cervix. It is made of either plastic or metal. It looks rather like a child's toy pistol. Putting one inside is NOT generally painful, unless the woman is very tense, so that her muscles contract. I must admit that occasionally a patient complains that a speculum examination pained her, especially if the doctor was inexperienced. But if you are consulting an experienced doctor, there should be no problem.
