Family First is writing to the Police Commissioner pleading forpolice to stop a proposed Boobs on Bikes parade happening in thecentre of Auckland on the same day families converge on the areafor the Rugby World Cup game against France.
National Director of Family First NZ Bob McCoskrie says thepolice and judiciary have taken a liberal but inconsistentinterpretation of what is deemed offensive "and the politicianshave failed to correct the anomaly".
"Now families who are in the Auckland city centre on a Saturdayand rugby families in town for the World Cup games are going to beconfronted by a tacky porn parade."
McCoskrie said section 125 of the Crimes Act clearly states thatit is a crime to "wilfully (do) any indecent act in any place towhich the public have or are permitted to have access, or withinview of any such place".
He said: "When Family First challenged the Auckland police ontheir failure to prevent a mid-week parade in 2007, they told usthat 'in the opinion of the police, given the standards of decencyobserved in this day and age, a female being topless in a parade ona weekday in (a main city street) will not in itself constitute anindecent act.'
"But we are now dealing with a weekend parade which presents fargreater potential for offence."
Most New Zealanders know it is indecent and inappropriate to betopless in a public place - which is why there is no acceptance ofthe behaviour in schools, workplaces or public gatherings, Hesaid.
"In failing to stop the porn parade, they ignore not only thelaw, but the standards of decency held by the wider community.
"The Boobs on Bikes parades are simply a commercial businessadvertising the porn industry. The fact that the hard-core pornindustry can give 'two-fingered waves' to local councils and thepolice proves that the protection of children and families is notbeing given priority."
