Outrage over Boobs on Bikes during RWC watch

Organisers have cancelled a Boobs on Bikes parade throughcentral Auckland which was planned to coincide with the Rugby WorldCup match between the All Blacks and France.

The group Family First slammed the proposed parade, saying itwould promote the porn industry and staging it on a weekend whenfamilies with children would be in the city was offensive.

Parade organiser Steve Crow says the organisers have beenadvised by Auckland Council that they can find no reason to deny apermit for the parade.

But he says public opinion is against it.

"For the first time in the history of Boobs On Bikes the tide ofpublic opinion is most definitely against us holding this event atthe date and time proposed due to the 'family nature' of the bigrugby thingy that is happening all over NZ at this time," Crow saidin a statement.

"A recent online poll shows 68% of people against us holdingBoobs On Bikes at this time. So, and in keeping with ourlongstanding belief in democracy.....as much as it pains us to doso, we are cancelling the NZX Rugby D-Cup Boobs On Bikes."

Crow said that from a legal perspective the parade was all goand added not that we have ever cared about permits anyway.

The parade would have featured topless models riding onmotorbikes through the city.

The All Blacks are set to play France at Eden Park on September24.

Family First 'stoked'

Family First says it's "stoked" that the proposed parade hasbeen canned.

National Director of Family First NZ Bob McCoskrie said familiesare the real winners, but so too is the image of New Zealand whichis being beamed to the world because of the Rugby World Cup.

"Families coming to the Auckland city centre on that day nolonger have to worry about being confronted by a tacky offensiveporn parade," he said.

McCroskrie said it is still concerning that the council islegally unable to prevent future parades like this happening, evenduring the Santa parade.

"Family First will continue to plead with politicians to amendthe law so that councils do have the clout to act in the bestinterests of families and prevent these parades happening in theirarea," he said."

"The fact that the hard-core porn industry can give'two-fingered waves' to local councils and the police proves thatthe protection of children and families is not being givenpriority."

"Children and families deserve the protection of the state fromoffensive and sexualised behaviour promulgated by the pornindustry."
