Randy Bruffy , 30, pleaded guilty to two counts of enticing a minor to produce child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. Bruffy had no plea agreement with prosecutors, but did not contest the government’s evidence or offer any of his own.
Bruffy was caught by the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force when investigators discovered he had one of the largest collections of child pornography they had seen. The investigation was handled by the task force , Campbell County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI .
During the hearing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nancy Healey said Bruffy admitted having more than a thousand images, including those he made of a 5-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl.
In both cases, he gained access to the children as a trusted family friend, U.S. Attorney Tim Heaphy said.
"These images are very disturbing. They’re heart-wrenching," Heaphy said. "Without a doubt, the Lynchburg community is safer with this man behind bars."
Bruffy was not found to have distributed the images he created, but he was actively trading child porn over the Internet, authorities said.
Healey said the case was prosecuted federally, in part, to take advantage of the federal mandatory minimum 15-year sentences for the production charges. While prosecutors need only prove that the camera equipment used to produce the images came to Bruffy across state lines, in this case he traveled out of state and back again in making the pictures of the girl, Healey said.
Bruffy remains jailed at the Lynchburg Adult Detention Center pending a sentencing hearing set for Dec. 15.
