Sex Offenders are living in Williston hotels and man camps, living out of their car in retail parking lots, or living right next door. And, Police say this small town community is changing.
"Sure our population is increasing, but has it doubled? I don`t see our population doubling as of right now, but our registration of sex offenders is doubling," said David Peterson, Williston police detective.
Notifications about high risk sex offenders are released. But there are an additional 47 known sex offenders living in Williston that are low or moderate risk.
You can go on the state website to locate sex offenders, or go right on your smart phone. There are several free apps that have maps of where sex offenders are living, and show detailed information of their offense.
Police say this is the only sure way to educate your children or your family of the risks.
"We don`t want to scare the community to the point that they`re fearful within their home, but that just to be more aware," said Peterson.
Being more alert and aware is what police are asking for. They ask that community members park in well lit areas, instruct their children not to talk to strangers, and be more observant of their surroundings.
"As the Williston Police Department, we`d live to be in 100% of the areas 100% of the time, and be there for community, response time nothing. But we can`t. And so we're asking the community for help in that area, too," said Peterson.
