Marvin King, described by some around the Harrisonburg community as "a helpful volunteer", has admitted to soliciting sex from a 14-year-old girl.
Court records show he has a long history of crime.
The arrest comes as a shock to some who knew him at "Our Community Place" in Harrisonburg, where he volunteered and helped the homeless.
Neighbors at the apartment complex where King lived are surprised as well, but court records show he had a troubled history.
He faced previous convictions of abduction and assault.
His latest charge of indecent liberties with a minor involved him creating a Facebook account, lying about his identity, and sending lewd photos and messages to a young teenager.
During the investigation, police found him by tracing the calls.
For one neighbor, it's tough to believe.
"He seemed like a pretty nice guy when I've talked to him," said Leroy Shifflett, who lives in an apartment building across from King. "It got me feeling crazy. You can never really tell who a person is. Some people do crazy stuff and you won't even know it. You can be friends with them and they have another life on the side. You just don't know."
King's sentencing date is scheduled for mid-October and he faces a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $2,500 fine.
