Timothy E. Howard-Hughes, of 3527 SW 20th Ave., was charged with lewd and lascivious battery on someone under age 16. He is an employee of the Tacachale state community for the developmentally disabled in Gainesville, where he helps residents with their daily living skills, Tacachale Director Michael Mayfield said.
In a Gainesville Police Department arrest report, investigators said Howard-Hughes met the teenage girl at her school bus stop around 7:30 a.m. Monday and drove her to her apartment, where he said the couple had consensual sex.
Police spokeswoman Cpl. Tscharna Senn said the girl's relatives found out about the incident and reported it.
Howard-Hughes told Officer James Hinson he thought the girl was 17 years old. Hinson said Howard-Hughes also admitted to the sexual activities.
Officials with the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, which oversees Tacachale, were being briefed on the the situation Tuesday morning, Mayfield said. State officials will determine whether Howard-Hughes should be placed on paid or unpaid administrative leave until the charge against him is resolved.
Mayfield said Howard-Hughes would not have any contact with Tacachale residents while the charge is pending against him.
Howard-Hughes was being held Tuesday morning at the Alachua County jail.
