KUALA TERENGGANU: Muslim hermaphrodites or "khunsa musykil" need to determine their sex with medical experts before obtaining a syariah court order to enable them to undergo sex change operation.
Terengganu Religious and Information Committee chairman Khazan Che Mat said there were individuals deemed "khunsa musykil" or whose sex was ambiguous as they were born with both male and female sex organs.
"Because of this, they are confused as to their sex but some may want to opt for a sex change operation.
"But their sex status must first be verified by medical experts and before undergoing the operation, they must refer their case to the syariah court for an order to me made whether they can go for a sex change operation or not."
Khazan said this when met by reporters after attending a fund handing-over ceremony of the Family Support Division under the Syariah Justice Department.
He said because of doubts about the sex of certain individuals, an edict was passed to give flexibility to those categorised as "khunsa musykil".
The National Fatwa Council which met on April 13 to 14, 1982 had discussed sex change and ruled, among others, that sex change from male to female and vice versa is haram, but those born as "khunsa musykil" or with both male and female sex organs are permitted to undergo operation to retain the most functional sex organ.
"I hope those who are confused about their sex will not act on their own without thinking of the consequences," Khazan said. - Bernama
