Tallahassee --
Inmates in Florida prisons will have to give up smoking by September 30th and they'll have to give up another vice right away.
The new DOC secretary is saying no to centerfolds.
Prisoners who enjoy Playboy, Penthouse may not have to worry about their mother finding these magazines under the mattress, but they do have to worry about the warden finding them.
Florida's new corrections secretary realized an already existing ban on pornographic materials wasn't always enforced behind bars.
"Secretary Buss, after he first came to Florida, was touring one of our institutions and saw a centerfold up in an inmate common area. So with his statement, he's put some teeth into our policy," said Florida Department of Corrections spokesperson Gretl Plesinger.
Plesinger says some inmates even had subscriptions to magazines like this.
DOC says now inmates risk discipline and possibly gain time if they are caught with nude pictures and magazines. A statement issued by Buss last week makes it clear staff can no longer just throw them away or look the other way.
The people we spoke to gave the crackdown mixed reviews.
"I think it's unacceptable. Everyone has needs. Everyone's got sexual needs and it can be frustrating if you are serving a lot of time in prison," John McCormack said. "It can make life even harder, and make you act more irrational and make you become an even more aggressive person," he said.
"I think if they're in prison, they shouldn't have the luxury of being able to view those sites. They're not there to please themselves. They're there to be punished," Brittney Taylor said. "So I think it's a good idea to finally enforce it."
