According to court documents, James Civello, 50, of Upper Black Eddy in Bucks County carried on a sexual relationship with a teenage girl at the Shipley School. The student and her parents came to Lower Merion police July 5 and told investigators that she had been having an ongoing relationship with Civello that began in April when she had sex with him at the Bryn Mawr Guest Suites, 31 Morton Road in Bryn Mawr.

"The relationship continued and the victim had sexual intercourse with Civello once at the Haverford Train Station and four to five times at the victim’s residence, which is in Lower Merion Township," Lower Merion Det. Christine Konieczny wrote in the affidavit.

In the affidavit, the student also described Civello as a mentor to her.

Civello was charged with corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children.

At his initial hearing July 8, Valentine ordered bail of $100,000

According to prosecutors, Civello attempted to flee from the area shortly before charges were filed.

"At the time that this occurred, the defendant had fled prior to the criminal complaint being filed," the assistant district attorney said.

Civello has been incarcerated since his arrest. He was represented by an attorney from the public defender’s office.

Thursday as part of his waiver of the charges at the preliminary hearing, bail was reduced.

Prosecutors did not object to the reduction in bail provided stipulations were added.

As a condition of his bail, Civello was ordered to have no contact the girl, with anyone under the age of 18 or any student from the Shipley School or to be on the grounds of the Shipley School.

Toward the end of the hearing, judge Valentine told Civello that if anyone who he was to have no contact with reached out to him he had to step away and end the contact.

After the hearing, police brought Civello to a waiting police car at the front of the district-court building in Ardmore. He was expected to make bail once back at the county prison.

Civello’s next scheduled court date will be Sept. 7 in Norristown for his formal arraignment.
