KANSAS CITY Bank robber sentenced
Jeremy L. Bagnell, 36, of Independence was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years and seven months in federal prison for helping another man rob Metcalf Bank, 10801 E. 23rd St., in Independence, in October. He also was ordered to pay $5,043 in restitution.
Co-defendant Michael D. Smythe, 50, of Independence, also has pleaded guilty, but has not been sentenced. Smythe and Bagnell were arrested the day of the robbery at an Independence house. Federal prosecutors said that Smythe was found inside a closet, sitting on a pile of money.
KANSAS CITY Child porn prompts prison term
A Blue Springs man who possessed a large cache of child pornography was sentenced Wednesday to 17 years and six months in federal prison. Michael Sottilare, 44, pleaded guilty last year to receiving child pornography over the Internet.
Investigators found a locked safe in his home with more than 100 CDs and DVDs containing still images and movies of child pornography, federal prosecutors said. An examination of Sottilares computer and other electronic media also uncovered more than 700 images of child pornography and more than 100 videos of child pornography, prosecutors said.
GRANDVIEW Teen found dead in hotel
A teenager was found dead in a room at the Rodeway Inn in Grandview, 15201 South U.S. 71, about 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Police Department said.
Authorities didnt say if the case was being investigated as a homicide, but detectives are working on the case. Her name was withheld until her family could be notified.
KANSAS CITY, KAN. Jury convicts man in slaying
A Wyandotte County jury on Wednesday convicted a man of first-degree murder in a shooting death.
Dominic L. Verser, 24, of Kansas City, Kan., also was convicted of criminal possession of a firearm and will be sentenced later for that and the March 26, 2009, murder of Olivia Anaekwe.
Anaekwes body was found in a vehicle in the 7300 block of Gilmore Street in Kansas City, Kan., prosecutors said.
COLUMBIA Feds help with disaster counseling
The spring and summer of 2011 have brought severe storms, massive flooding and tornadoes to much of Missouri, leaving thousands of people with a variety of emotional issues.
Now, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is giving the states Department of Mental Health $1.5 million to provide crisis counseling to survivors of the disasters.
No appointments or office visits are needed. Crisis counselors assist people who call one of a half-dozen toll-free phone numbers, each one serving a designated county or counties.
The service is available around the clock to people who live or work in any of 25 counties affected by recent disasters. The counties are generally located in eastern and southern Missouri, along with Pettis County, where a tornado hit Sedalia.
ST. JOHN, Mo. Errant arrow strikes woman at breakfast
An 80-year-old St. Louis County woman is recovering after she was struck by an arrow while eating breakfast in her home.
Margaret Shofner of St. John was struck Tuesday when an arrow came through a window and lodged in her mouth. It was shot by a man who was shooting target practice nearby. He could face assault and armed criminal action charges.
The arrow did not have a razor edge, and Shofner was able to pull it from her mouth. She was not seriously hurt.
HARRISONVILLE
Driver exam office relocated
A driver examination station in Harrisonville is temporarily in a new home.
The station, normally located at the National Guard Armory, has been moved to the second floor of the Cass County Courthouse until further notice, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol. The move was prompted by a broken air conditioner.
