A Starkville man was arrested today on charges involving possession of child pornography, officials said.
Attorney General Jim Hood said John A. Brown, 60, was arrested just before noon today by AG's cyber crime investigators, as well as agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Starkville Police Department.
Brown is charged with one count possession of child pornography, officials said. If he's convicted, he faces up to 40 years behind bars.
"We've been steadily arresting people for this crime, but we're about to pick up some steam when the new law goes into effect July 1st that will provide us with even more resources to go after child pornographers," said Hood.
Hood was referring to Mississippi House Bill 227, the "Sexual Offenses Against Children" act, which increases punishment on violators found guilty of sexual offenses involving minors.
