A former Woodrow Wilson High School English teacher was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in federal prison for receiving and possessing child pornography.
U.S. District Judge Ed Kinkeade ordered that Jon Leslie Lyons, 45, not get credit for time he has already served since his June arrest. Lyons must also register as a sex offender for life after his release, the judge ordered.
Lyons came to the attention of law enforcement last May when the district's Office of Professional Responsibility notified Immigration and Customs Enforcement that child pornography had been found on Lyons' school computer. At the time, Lyons was on administrative suspension for making sexually inappropriate comments around students.
When agents met with Lyons at his apartment near the high school, Lyons admitted that he had images of nude children on his computer and iPhone.
After his arrest, the Texas Education Agency confirmed that Lyons' teaching certificate expired in July 2009, which meant that he did not have the proper certification to work in a classroom for the 2009 to 2010 school year.
For two years, Lyons taught in Dallas ISD on a probationary certificate, which is commonly used for new teachers seeking certification. After his arrest, DISD said Lyons had all the credentials required to receive certification for his third year, but he apparently made a mistake when filling out an online certification form.
